General Mental Health and Physical Health Cases

I have extensive experience working as a Clinical Psychologist with the full range of adult mental health problems. I have a particular interest in short term psychological therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Psychotherapy and Counselling. I generally see people over 16 years of age individually but sometimes this may be done as a couple or family. Occasionally I will see children, but this is decided at the time on a case by case basis. Family therapy is available and I will also provide marital therapy and psychosexual counselling for couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship.

Private Medical / Healthcare Insurance cases are accepted. I am a registered and recognised provider of private Clinical Psychology services with all the UK Private Healthcare Insurance firms.

Further information and help

Most people attending my clinics come with one or more of a range of common problems including, for example; anxiety disorders, stress, phobias, depression, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, relationship problems and difficulties as a result of trauma or abuse. There is a considerable body of evidence illustrating that psychological therapy can be effective and helpful in the treatment of such mental health problems. Further information about this is available from the Department of Health Website. www.dh.gov.uk. Look for the booklet "Treatment Choice in Psychological Therapies and Counselling". This is also available in a brief version. Also the booklet "Choosing Talking Therapies" is particularly informative and contains a number of fact sheets and useful addresses. Free copies of both these booklets are available from, Department of Health Publications, PO Box 777, London SE1 6XH. Tel: 0300 123 1002.

There is a wealth of useful and good quality information available on the NHS website. A good starting point would be to go to NHS Choices www.nhs.uk

Occupational Health Services

(A) Employee assistance, Return to work support, Assessment and treatment programmes

I provide a service for a number of organisations and businesses in the area. Sometimes this is provided to staff by their employers as part of their Occupational Health Service or an Employee Assistance Program.

Stress, anxiety and depression are amongst the main causes of long term absence from work with total absence reported to be costing the UK economy in excess of £13 billion every year. Early and appropriate intervention may provide considerable benefit to staff and may prevent the development of long term chronic conditions. Companies will benefit in terms of reducing absenteeism and staff turnover, and improving staff productivity, morale and motivation.

Return to work after accident or illness can all too frequently be complicated or delayed by psychological problems and in particular by anxiety and depression or difficulties in adjusting to changed circumstances. Short term psychological treatment programmes can be very effective in enabling appropriate return to work and resumption of productivity.

People with head injuries, long term conditions, chronic pain or progressive neurological diseases often will require and benefit from specific rehabilitation programmes designed to support them in their re-introduction to employment or other purposeful activity and a return as far as is possible to a normal lifestyle.

Early intervention can be very important however staff may have difficulty in obtaining an appropriate NHS referral and they may encounter delays and lengthy waiting lists. In addition they may have difficulty getting referred to the appropriate mental health specialist who is trained to provide treatment for their specific problems.

Employers and Occupational Health Staff may contact me directly to enquire further about my services. Generally I can see new cases within one or two weeks of referral but I may be able to respond more quickly if necessary.

(B) Trauma support service

A trauma support service is available to organisations and businesses following traumatic incidents and accidents in the workplace. In recent years this has been provided in the banking and finance sector, as well as in other organisations, public services and businesses. It may include a consultancy service for managers, occupational health and other key staff. Generally an initial assessment of the overall situation is required. Direct trauma support work either with individuals or groups of affected staff provided in the form of on-site visits or clinic appointments is available. This service is now available only within the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire region.

Personal Injury, Accident Insurance and Medico-Legal Treatment Services

Over recent years I have developed a special interest in the psychological treatment of people having difficulties in adjustment following industrial accidents, traffic accidents or head injuries. In addition a specialist Driving Rehabilitation service has been developed for people having problems with anxiety or posttraumatic symptoms following road traffic accidents.

All referrals from a medico-legal route including personal injury compensation cases, must be directly from an instructing Solicitor or from the Insurance Company/Agency involved who will remain responsible for all fees. In this situation I do not accept self referrals or cases where the patient will be responsible for their own fees. Full details of terms are available upon request and would need to be agreed in advance of commencement of work. Generally patients are seen for assessment firstly, following which a report is prepared giving details of treatment proposals and estimated costs of a suitable treatment programme. I aim to work in accordance with the Civil Procedure Rules, Code of Best Practice on Rehabilitation.

A range of specialist treatment services are available to accident victims and personal injury cases. Complex care packages, including other professions, can be prepared and managed when required. Solicitors may contact me directly with any enquiries. Further advice can be given about Expert Witness or Court Reports.

However I am not personally taking on any further Expert Witness / Medico-Legal reporting at the present time as I am focusing now on developing my treatment and rehabilitation services. I will indicate HERE on the site when I am next able to allocate time to take on further Expert Witness assessment and reporting.

Driving Rehabilitation Courses

This is a specialist treatment service available to Solicitors, Insurers and Rehabilitation Agencies referring clients who have developed psychological problems as a result of road traffic accidents.

In addition to suffering physical injuries people who have been involved in road accidents often go on to develop a range of psychological problems. Some people may develop post traumatic symptoms or anxiety, depression and other adjustment problems following an accident. Many people will have developed a travelling anxiety and a loss of confidence and will have difficulties in returning to driving again following an accident. As a consequence their occupation, activities and lifestyle may have become more restricted.

(These psychological problems may need to be expertly assessed as part of the legal case and the costs of any appropriate treatment may need to be included in the financial settlement. Further advice can be given about such expert witness reports however I am not currently undertaking any more court reports myself at the present time.)

Over the last few years I have been developing a specialist treatment service for such accident victims. I found that although psychological therapy may often help people to resolve or over come such problems it did not on its own always lead to them being able to quickly return to actually driving confidently and safely on the road again. Likewise, driving instruction on its own was generally insufficient to help people overcome serious psychological problems such as post traumatic stress disorder or travel anxiety/phobia. Furthermore in some cases if people are not psychologically prepared and sufficiently recovered driving instruction alone may involve a re-traumatisation and actually be detrimental.

The Driving Rehabilitation Courses have now been developed to provide a unique combination of specialised psychological therapy and on the road driving instruction. Each person is seen for assessment and then an individual programme and treatment plan is developed specifically for them and to meet their particular needs. Psychological therapy is largely cognitive behavioural in form and is based upon well established and validated principles. The driving instructor and myself will meet and work closely together throughout the preparation and provision of the course. (Please note that hypnosis is not available on these courses and I do not advocate its use in these circumstances at all.)

At present this specialist treatment and driving rehabilitation course service is only available for people in the vicinity of my clinics in the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire area. I am sorry but because of the travelling distances involved I am at the present time unable to take people from farther afield.

Please note that self-referrals or cases where the patient will be responsible for their own fees are not accepted onto driving rehabilitation courses. All such referrals must be from the Solicitor, Agency or Insurer involved who will remain responsible for all fees both for the assessment and any treatment. In all cases patients are seen for assessment first. All relevant expert witness reports will need to be received at least 1 week in advance of assessment. Signed agreement to terms will be required in advance of assessment and treatment. Following the assessment a treatment plan will be prepared and a report including an estimation of treatment costs will be provided. The report will be headed to indicate that it has not been prepared for the court and is not a medico-legal report. The service is provided in accordance with the Civil Procedure Rules, Code of Best Practice on Rehabilitation.

If you are a Solicitor / Legal Representative, Insurer or Rehabilitation Agency and are thinking of referring one of your clients or should you require any further information please telephone me on 01773 875683 or write to me at; Homestead Farm, 10 Alfreton Road, Newton, Alfreton, Derbys.
